THE STORY OF POK

By Bruno Grandpierre

The POK name has a story all its own.

In the 19th century, my great-grandfather founded the National Meteorology Society of France. His extensive knowledge of the weather brought him to the region of Bretagne to spend his vacation time. He enjoyed the area so much, that he decided to stay and built a summer cottage along the beach for his family to enjoy.

This was the perfect retreat for a young boy, my father, while growing up, with the beach and sea at his front door and the stars in the open sky each night. What more could a child ask for? My father lived there for years, on the sandy beaches and water bound boats. For my tenth birthday, my father gave me a sailboat. Keep in mind, in the region of Bretagne we have two types of mariners that challenge the sea. We have the fisherman and the yachtsmen of whom the sea picks no favorites. Both endure the beauty and boldness of the sea's trials. This sea, in particular, is one of the most treacherous in the world with gale force winds and tides of 50 feet coupled with heavy under-currents.

Both fisherman and yachtsmen alike name their boats, yet in different styles. The fisherman use paint to name their boats. However, the yachtsmen don the boats with their given name in a bronze plaque affixed to the boats stern. Being in bronze, it was very expensive for a boy of ten years old, with no financial means, to gift my boat with a name anything short of a few letters. I decided to search the dictionary and found a name (in Bretagne) that was short and to be inexpensive at best. My boat's name would show the mighty sea that we were ready for the confrontation of all the elements the sea saw fit to lash our way. My sailboat, the "POK," consistently navigated the seas disregarding the plight of capsizing; no sea would weather the "POK" to its demise. After a lengthy career in the engineering and management world, I decided to create my own company in the belief that I would confront similar seas in the business world as the "POK" had experienced on the open seas when I was a child. As the "POK" consistently triumphed over the seas during each voyage, I chose to name my new company POK.

"POK"! I forgot to tell you that in Bretagne POK means "kiss" of which we know a kiss to bring with it happiness, confidence, safety of strength from the bearer, and a smile from all who encounter it.
